The Ancient Face of New Zealand?
In 1939, a 13-year old Jim Eyles of Wairau Bar, Blenheim, discovered on the family farm what is now purported to be the most ancient and important archaeological site in New Zealand: a grave containing a human skull, along with ritually-placed artifacts which included a giant moa egg.
Since that time, many more archaeological sites have been recovered, and many more artifacts have been recovered, but almost 80 years later, the question still remains: who were these “moa hunters”, and why do the oral traditions of later Māori say so little about the flightless avian giants which – allegedly – they hunted to extinction?
